Elementary Algebra

2. Algebra and the Real Numbers

Description

With a foundation of some arithmetic skills, we investigate that basis of Algebra.  In this topic, we explore sets and the real number system; symbols, variables, and the absolute value; addition, subtract, multiplication and division or real numbers (including signed numbers); and properties of real numbers.

Sections of this topic include:

1.   Sets and Real Numbers

In this section, we explore the idea of sets and set notation as well as the different sets of real numbers such as natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers and irrational numbers.  Some groups of this section include Understanding the elipsis in sets; listing elements of a set; determining an element of a set; determing subsets of a set; set builder notation; listing all subsets of a set; finite and infinite sets; listing subsets of real numbers a number belongs to; expressing fractions as repeating decimals; and examples of numbers from sets.

2.   Symbols, Variables, and Absolute Value

In this section, we explore the notions of symbols, what a variable is, and using absolute values.  Groups within this section include translating phrases into algebraic expressions; finding the absolute value of a number; using absolute value to determine true or falst; evaluating expressions with absolute values.

3.   Addition and Subtraction of Real Numbers

Now that we have a notion of positive and negative real numbers, we investigate rules on how to add or subtract real numbers.  Groups in this section contain adding signed numbers; translating phrases and adding signed numbers; subtracting signed numbers; translating phrases and subtracting signed numbers; adding and subtracting signed numbers together; addind and subtracting signed real numbers using a calculator.

4.   Multiplication and Divison of Real Numbers

Extending our knowledge from addition and subtraction, we continue by learning how to multiply and divide positive and negative real numbers.  Groups within this section include multiplying signed numbers; dividing signed numbers; and using order of operations with signed numbers.

5.   Properties of Real Numbers

Wtih a basis now of operations of real numbers, we explore properties of real numbers such as the associative property, commutative property, distributive property, identity property, and the inverse property.  Groups within this section include Identifying expressions as examples of properties of real numbers; using the distributive property; using properties of real numbers; using properties of real numbers to simplify variable expressions.
