5. Laws of Exponents, Poynomials, and Polynomial Functions
Description
Since Algebra is the generalization of Arithmetic, we explore general operations with algebraic expressions. In this topic, we explore exponents and Scientific Notation; how to add subtract, multiply and divide polynomials. We finish this topic with explore a different way to perform long division of polynomials, synthetic division.
Topics in this subject include:
1. Exponents and Scientific Notation
In this section, we begin by refreshing our knowledge of laws of exponents. We also explore more completely Scientific Notation. Groups within this section include: evaluating powers; writing numbers in scientific notation; writing numbers in decimal notation; simplifying scientific notation; simplifying expressions using laws of exponents; simplifying harder expressions using laws of exponents.
2. Adding and Subtracting Polynomials
Exploring polynomials, we investigate in classifying polynomials, adding and subtracting polynomials, and investigating polynomial functions. Groups within this section include: determining polynomials; writing polynomials in standard form, the degree of a polynomial, classifying polynomials; simplifying polynomials; simplifying polynomials by removing grouping symbols; adding or subtracting polynomial functions; adding or subtracting polynomial functions using a calculator.
3. Multiplying Polynomials
Exploring the next operations with polynomials, we focus on how to multiply polynomails. Groups contained within this section include: multiplying monomials by polynomials; multiplying polynomials using special products; multiplying polynomial functions; and multiplying harder polynomials.
4. Dividing Polynomials
This section investigates various levels of long division of polynomails including dividing a polynomial by a monomial or dividng a polynomial by another polynomial.
5. Sythetic Division
As an improvement in division of polynomials, we investigate synthetic division when we divide a polynomial by a linear binomial. Groups within this section include: using synthetic division with a horizontal format; using synthetic division with a fraction format; using synthetic division with fractions. |
