Elementary Algebra: 5. Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities

Description

If we can graph one line, why not two or more? Possibly these lines intersect at a point which leads to the idea of system of equations. In this topic, we explore solving linear equations by the Graphing, Elimination, and Substitution Methods as well as solving systems of linear inequalities and how to apply these skills to real world applications.

Sections of this topic include:

  1. Solving Systems of Linear Equations by the Graphing Method

The first of three ways to solve a system of linear equations is by graphing lines and find where they intersect. Groups in this section include determining if ordered pairs are solutions to a system of linear equations; classifying a system of equations as independent, dependent, or inconsistent; solving a system of linear equations using the graphing method.

  2. Solving Systems of Linear Equations by the Elimination Method

Finding solving a system of linear equations by the graphing method is inefficient, we discover better ways to solve a system. We find our second way to be solving systems of linear equations by the eliminationi method. Groups in this section include solving systems by the elimination method; solving systems by first writing equations in general form and then solving using the elimination method.

  3. Solving Systems of Linear Equations by the Substitution Method

The third way to solve a system of linear equations is by using the substitution method. Groups in this section include Solving systems by the substitution method; solving systems by either the substitution method or elimination method.

  4. Solving Systems of Linear Inequalities

If we can solve a system of equalities, why not solve a system of inequalities? One Group in this section include how to solve a system of inequalities.

  5. More Applications

In this section, we explore how to apply system of equations and inequalities to the real world.
